Golden Bamboo was created to honor our Vietnamese roots and create a system of support for Vietnamese-Americans, Refugees, and Immigrants. We embrace the blending of cultures and changes that all generations are embracing.

Golden Bamboo is a senior walking group with a mission to bridge communities and generations through arts, culture, education and business. This walking group for seniors provides a safe way to keep active and support one another.
Volunteer with UsThere are many ways to volunteer with our community:
- Our senior walking group is often volunteering across the Tacoma community. volunteer opportunities may involve cooking, serving food, elderly care, and cultural performances. Please contact us to get involved. - We need many hands to help manage our annual Lunar New Years event. Roles will include greeting visitors, serving food, media, and more. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. |
Sunflowers Dance Troupe began as a way to support young refugee girls from Vietnam and has blossomed into a multi-generational community that welcome people of all genders, backgrounds, and ages. We are still committed to passing on our cultural and art traditions through dance.
Lunar New Year 2025Our next annual Lunar New Years event is planned for Sunday, January 26th, 2025 at the Eastside Community Center, from 12 to 4 pm.

Tết Lunar New Year connects generations through tradition

Traditions keep culture alive, honor roots, and bridge the gap between generations. All members of our community are invited to take part in the Lunar New Year traditions of Vietnam at Tết Lunar New Year at the Eastside Community Center on January 28.
This is the second year Tết Lunar New Year will take place at the Eastside Community Center. While Tết is fairly new to the Eastside, it has been hosted by the Tacoma Vietnamese community since 1990. The event producers from Golden Bamboo Walking Group, a recreation and social club for senior Vietnamese women, have a long history of promoting Vietnamese culture and supporting refugees from Vietnam in Tacoma.
Golden Bamboo leader Lisa Mathusz is excited to once again bring this vibrant celebration of Vietnamese culture to Eastside. Hosting this event was part of her dream for her neighborhood when she advocated for the creation of the Eastside Community Center years ago. The Golden Bamboo played an active role in building support for the center’s creation, taking to the streets to have conversations with Eastside neighbors and collect signatures in support of building the center.
